Distance: 8 miles
Time: 1.5 to 2 hours
Terrain: Dirt road, dirt trail, single-track, loop
Elevation: 1,200 to 2,950 feet; approximately 1,800 feet of elevation gain
Best time to go: Late spring through fall
How to get there: Heading west from Wenatchee on Highway 2, drive to the town of Leavenworth. Turn right onto Chumstick Road. Turn left onto Freund Canyon Road. At 2.3 miles, turn left onto FR7702, and stay left at each fork you encounter. You’ll reach a gate at the Friendly Creek Tree Farm; park here, along FR7200.
Highlights: Freund Canyon trail is “the usual” for the Leavenworth area: straight up with a fun and fast downhill. The trail crests just below a ridgeline that offers great views of the Leavenworth Valley. The long downhill delivers plenty of berms for catching air and jarring your body if you so choose.
Lowlights: Creek crossings and berm jumps should be navigated with care if you are new to mountain biking. And stay straight on the trail at the summit; the hard left there takes you on a more technical, almost direct line downhill back to your car.
Things to know: No permit or fee is required for parking or use.
